In this fourth edition, the International Festival of Literature and Portuguese Language — Lisboa 5L — intends to “explore the affective, cultural and social connections that inhabit the different territories” of the city and that “transform it into the many Lisbons that Lisbon is”, he said. the municipality, in a statement.

Most initiatives will take place at Palácio Galveias, including a cycle of five debates, which will address different perspectives on multilingualism, linguistic variation and the birth of new artistic expressions in multicultural contexts.

The panels of this round of debates include the participation of the Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva, Kalaf Epalanga, António Contador, Flávio Almada, Margarida Vale de Gato, Ana Naomi de Sousa, Rui Sousa Silva, Luís Sarmento, André Barata and Carlos Pereira, among other guests.

The program foresees the organization of a set of “Author Tables”, which will have the presence of national and international writers, such as Jokha Alharthi, Taiye Selasi, Bruno Vieira Amaral, Susana Moreira Marques, Paulina Chiziane, Javier Cercas , Emicida, Gregorio Duvivier, Inês Fonseca Santos, Mélio Tinga or Cláudia Lucas Chéu.

These tables will launch “new dialogues” between the public and the guest authors, based on this year’s theme and as inspiration “Lisbon’s cultural effervescence and other contemporary metropolises”.

The festival also includes in its programming a cinema cycle — “Cinema-Cidade” – integrated in the Festival IndieLisboa 2023, with the screening of films by national and foreign directors with “different looks and perspectives on the reality of a neighborhood and its communities”.

According to the organization, a session of short films, presented by Ricardo Vieira Lisboa, and the literary cycle Sete Centenários, dedicated to Eduardo Lourenço, Eugénio de Andrade, Mário Cesariny, Mário-Henrique Leiria, Millôr Fernandes, Natália Correia and Urbano Tavares Rodrigues.

This cycle will take place in seven bookshops in Lisbon, partners of the festival, with seven initiatives designed for guests who have a strong connection with these authors, including Rui Zink, Nuno Costa Santos, Dulce Maria Cardoso, Fernando Pinto do Amaral, Filipa Martins, Helena Roseta, Gonçalo M. Tavares, Lídia Jorge, or José Manuel dos Santos, among others.

As part of the educational programme, there will be theater sessions and training workshops for students and teachers around reflection on language, multilingualism and dialect variation.

Music, performances and itineraries also occupy a prominent place in this festival, demonstrating how new genres, new artistic expressions and new musical creations bring new realities and community relationships.

This edition of the 5L festival also intends to reinforce the vocation of libraries, as multifunctional spaces, proposing, in addition to programming, dialogues between guest artists and the public, and moments of readings, releases and presentations by guest bookstores and publishers, advances the municipality .
