Los Angeles County collects toys for its lending program

A toy drive to benefit the Toy Loan Program Los Angeles County begins this Monday at six locations.

The program solicits educational games and toys, video games and video game consoles, dolls and stuffed animals, and toys for children with functional needs or disabilities, according to Heather Johnson, a spokeswoman for LA Sanitation & Environment, which is running the campaign.

The department requests that no violent toys or toys that look like weapons be donated, Johnson said.

Kids in Los Angeles County can borrow a toy for free and take it home for a week.

The program provides access to toys to more than 30,000 low-income children each year, Johnson said.

Toys can be donated between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, through August 25 at the following locations:

All locations will be closed on July 4th.

The toy drive is one of several the department holds annually in an effort to help low-income and homeless people and reduce the number of items that end up in landfills, Johnson said.

The department also conducts drives to collect food, clothing, condiments and utensils, toiletries, blankets, and socks.

The department is responsible for collecting, cleaning, and recycling solid and liquid waste generated by residential, commercial, and industrial users in Los Angeles and surrounding communities.
