Water police officers freed a deer from a cargo ship. Then they fished the animal out of the water with a boat hook at the weekend. The deer got lost in the four meter deep empty hold of the ship that was tied to the silo canal. A citizen alerted the police, as the West Directorate announced on Sunday. A policeman and a member of the hunting authority caught the animal – but it escaped on the ship.

The deer fell into the canal, it was said. The policeman grabbed the boat hook and fished the animal out of the water, which was still in the net the two men had used to catch it. They used the hook to pull the wet deer onto land and then released it “visibly weakened”.
