A wintry week is expected in Northern Norway. A low pressure over southern Norway means that it can blow up to a small storm along the coast. In addition, there is a great danger of avalanches in several places.

Our long country will have varied weather in the coming week, reports Roar Inge Hansen, meteorologist on duty at StormGeo.

Greetings from the North Atlantic

During Wednesday, a low pressure should come from the North Atlantic into the Norwegian Sea. Then milder air will come over our country.

– This applies from Lofoten downwards, then it will be milder and more rainfall. In outer regions it will come as rain and hail and in inner regions as snow and sleet, says Hansen.

The low pressure comes in towards Bergen, passes over Langfjellet and into Sweden.

– The low pressure is quite intense and can give wind in a small storm from Lindesnes and up to Rogaland for periods in the middle of the day on Wednesday.

Such strong winds along the coast can produce waves with a height of eight metres.

Weather forecast

On Thursday, the weather changes a little. Then we get a ridge of high pressure over southern Norway. That means colder weather.

– Maybe the temperature is creeping down towards minus ten degrees in Oslo. Cold and nice, summarizes Hansen.

But it probably won’t last long. The meteorologist reports that warmer air will come in from the west during Friday.

During January, it rained a crazy amount. According to the meteorologists, several places have broken their own rainfall record for the month of January in previous years.

And it will rain in February too.

– On Friday and Saturday there will be precipitation as rain in southern Norway, says meteorologist Hansen.

Avalanche danger

The changing weather will present several challenges.

– Those thinking of going to the mountains later in the week should be aware of difficult driving conditions. If you can go up on Thursday, it’s probably best, says Hansen.

In addition, an avalanche warning has been issued. The danger level has been set to level three for Tuesday and Wednesday, and the meteorologist does not rule out that it could be raised further closer to the weekend.

– It may stabilize somewhat on Thursday when it gets colder. But then the weather will be mild again, so the degree of danger may increase.

Cold and fine in the north

In Northern Norway, however, a wintry week is expected.

– That’s how it should be, sub-zero temperatures, a little rain and a little sun, says Hansen.

– Admittedly, the sun has just returned, so it is quite low.

But there will be a bit of blue sky all around. And it will be more and more blue to see the sky throughout the week.

At the same time, it will be even colder, up to 30 minus degrees in the interior and 10 minus degrees in Tromsø and Bodø, says the meteorologist.
