Man shot in New Bedford goes to hospital, dies shortly after

A New Bedford, Massachusetts man was killed Thursday night in a shooting that occurred in the city, according to Bristol County prosecutors.

The New Bedford Police Department received a notification just after 11 p.m. Thursday of multiple gunshots on County Street, near Winsor Street, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office. Police also received multiple 911 calls.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found evidence that a shooting had occurred, but found no one injured. Not long after, the 27-year-old victim showed up at Saint Luke’s Hospital in a private vehicle, authorities said. He was pronounced dead shortly after 11:30 p.m. at the hospital.

The murdered man has been identified as Amareuito Fernandes.

A homicide investigation has been launched and involves New Bedford police, state police detectives assigned to the local prosecutor’s office and prosecutors from the Homicide Unit.
