Mayor presents budget for 2025

The Executive Budget for 2025 is 111.6 billion dollars, with which, according to Mayor Adams, the aim is to invest in several areas, such as improving the security of New Yorkers, for which 1,200 police officers will be added to the streets. . There will be a total of 35 thousand uniformed personnel patrolling the city.

Another important point that the mayor highlighted is the expansion of 3-k programs throughout the city, increasing the availability of early childhood education classes and services for students with special needs.

Maximize enrollment with Pre-K and 3-K spaces, something that Councilwoman Carmen De La Rosa welcomes.

“We are grateful for the collaborations that have allowed programs, for example, such as the Early Education program, to be restored, restorations for libraries, which are things that really matter a lot to us, on the side of the Municipal Council and that we have been pushing to ensure it is within this final budget,” the councilwoman said.

On the other hand, the mayor also announced the investment that will be allocated to stable housing for the most vulnerable New Yorkers, through financing the city’s supplemental eviction prevention and homeless family programs.

“For us, the reaction right now is that we are looking at the details of the budget, seeking to ensure that priorities for us such as housing, mental health, the physical health of our communities, healthcare, all those services that our communities deserve and need are part of an equitable budget for our city,” De La Rosa added.

The mayor also spoke about investing in unemployed New Yorkers to connect them with job opportunities and career support for the entire public workforce.

Regarding immigrants seeking asylum, Adams pointed out that the city will continue to provide them with the necessary help and that thanks to the different programs they have been able to get ahead with the situation to which the city has been faced.

For example, the 30-day stay for single immigrants has produced results and has reduced city spending, the mayor said. The idea was to reduce the cost of maintaining immigrants seeking asylum by 30% and that has been reduced by 586 million in the fiscal year 2024-2025.

“Our audit showed payments with enormous overcharges, destined for the personnel who provide services to immigrants seeking asylum, the budget announcement now indicates that they will have these expenses under control, which is good news,” said the comptroller of the City, Brad Lander.

For their part, children’s advocates indicated they were satisfied that the mayor has included several early childhood education initiatives in the budget.
