According to the first elements of the investigation, the trains collided for an as yet undetermined reason in a tunnel connecting the Potrero and La Raza stations, on line 3 of the metro which crosses the city from north to south.

At least one person was killed and 16 injured in a collision between two metro trains in Mexico City, a megalopolis of some 20 million inhabitants, authorities said on Saturday.

“Sixteen people have been taken to hospital (…) For the time being, one regrettable death has been reported,” the mayor of the capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced on Twitter.

A precedent in 2021

The Mexico City Metro is regularly under fire for the lack of maintenance of the facilities. In May 2021, the collapse of a bridge as a train passed by caused the death of 26 people and injured a hundred.

Inaugurated in 1969, it has 12 lines, 195 stations for 226 kilometers of tracks. In 2021, it had carried 837 million passengers.
