More than seven million tourists arrived in the country during the year 2022, through different routes, of which more than 900,000 arrived during December of that year, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) revealed this Thursday.

In December 2022, 900,100 non-resident visitors entered through all access roads to the country; of which 431,100 were tourists and 469,000 were hikers, a term that refers to people who visit a site without spending the night there, unlike the tourist who does stay in the different hotel services to spend at least one full night, broken down telam.

45.1% of non-resident tourists arrived in Argentina by air; 41.2% used the land route; and the remaining 13.7% arrived by river/sea and the main origins of visitors, which represented 60.3% of the total inbound tourism, were Chile with 17.0%, and Brazil, with 15. 3%, followed by Uruguay and Europe, both with 14.0%.

As published by the agency, trips abroad, meanwhile, reached 776,800 resident visitors in December by all international routes, of which 457,800 were tourists and 319,000 were hikers.

47.3% of resident tourists left the country by land; 37.1% by air; and 15.6%, through the fluvial/maritime route. The main destinations were Uruguay, with 21.8%; Brazil, with 18.9%; and Chile, with 18.1%; which jointly represented 58.7% of the total outbound tourism.

In December, a positive balance of 123,300 international visitors was registered through all access routes to the country. This result was due to a positive balance of 150,000 hikers, which managed to offset a negative balance of 26,700 tourists.

During December, non-resident visitors made 961,600 trips and resident visitors, 776,800 trips.

Tourist trips are the trips made by visitors, since a non-resident visitor could take more than one tourist trip, whereas, in outbound tourism, the number of visitors and tourist trips coincide due to their definition.

In the annual accumulated, 7,214,500 non-resident visitors arrived through all access routes to the country, of which 3,645,200 were tourists and 3,569,300 were excursionists; while trips abroad totaled 7,891,100 resident visitors through all international routes, of which 5,142,300 were tourists and 2,748,800 were excursionists.

In 2022, a negative balance of 676,600 international visitors was registered by all access roads to the country due to a negative balance of 1,497,000 tourists, and a positive balance of 820,500 hikers.

In December 2022, 194,300 non-resident tourist arrivals by international air were estimated, a figure that presented an interannual increase of 169.9%. In the past twelve months of the year, 1,691,100 arrivals of non-resident tourists were reached, an increase of 700.9% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The Ezeiza and Aeroparque airports concentrated 91.3% of arrivals in the period, with a year-on-year increase of 669.9%.

Departures abroad reached a total of 170,000 resident tourists, a figure that registered an interannual increase of 80.1%. In the twelve months of 2022, these departures totaled 2,333,500 and accumulated a year-on-year increase of 265.5%.

Once again, the Ezeiza International Airport and the Jorge Newbery Metropolitan Airport represented 90.7% of the departures of resident tourists in the January-December period, with an increase of 242.5% compared to the same period of the previous year.

YoY increase

In December, the balance of international tourists was positive at 24,300 for the entire international air route, but the balance of tourists in the period January-December 2022 was negative at 642,400.

In December 2022, a total of 177,000 non-resident tourist arrivals were estimated at the international airports of Ezeiza and Aeroparque, a figure that presented a year-on-year increase of 167.0%.

In turn, trips abroad totaled 149,300 resident tourists, which meant an increase of 74.5% compared to the same month of the previous year. Therefore, the balance was positive in 27,700 international tourists.

Non-resident tourists arriving at Ezeiza International Airport and Jorge Newbery Airport came mainly from Europe, 24.8%; United States and Canada, 21.5%; and Brazil, 18.1%.

Likewise, 3,267,800 overnight stays of non-resident tourists were registered, with an average stay of 18.5 nights. The highest average stays were observed in the blocks of countries that make up the “Rest of America”, with 31.0 nights; and Europe, with 24.6 nights.

Brazil, favorite

Resident tourists who departed from these airports mainly chose Brazil as their destination, 22.9%; Rest of America, 19.3%; and Europe, 16.5%. 3,144,700 overnight stays of resident tourists were registered, with an average stay of 21.1 nights. The highest average stays were in Europe, with 43.6 nights; and Bolivia, with 28.6 nights.

In 2022, the border crossings surveyed in the International Tourism Survey (ETI) represented 56.2% of the total number of non-resident tourists who arrived through all the crossings in the country; and they constitute 53.7% of the total number of resident tourists who came out through all the steps.

41.2% of resident tourists left our country through the Ezeiza and Aeroparque airports; 5.5%, through the Port of Buenos Aires; 3.7%, through the Cristo Redentor land crossing; 2.2%, through the Córdoba airport; and 1.1% through the Mendoza airport.

Of the total number of non-resident tourists who arrived in Argentina through the ETI steps, 42.4% entered through the Ezeiza and Aeroparque airports; 6.6%, through the port of Buenos Aires; 4.0%, through the Cristo Redentor land crossing; 2.1%, through the Mendoza airport; and 1.1%, through the Córdoba airport.
