MTA retires new subway cars

The vast majority of the MTA’s shiny new subway cars have been removed from the tracks.

This is reported by the online medium Gothamist.

Six of the seven new R-211 trains on the “A” line were out of service due to faulty gearboxes.

A damaged gearbox can cause the train wheels to lock and drag, which can flatten the wheels and cause a bumpy ride.

Through a statement, the MTA says that “During routine operations of subway cars R-211 in service, transit crews discovered defective gearboxes in some of the cars.

“As is the case whenever we identify an issue, we have temporarily removed the affected trains from service until further testing is completed.”

This clip shows an example of one of the train cars with a faulty gearbox making a loud noise.

The MTA adds that the removal of the train cars will not affect service.
