Twitter boss Elon Musk has announced that the platform will soon be equipped with a function for voice and video calls. “Then you can talk to people anywhere in the world without having to give them your phone number,” the multi-billionaire said on Twitter yesterday. Musk also announced that private direct messages on Twitter would be encrypted as of today.

The functions of Twitter are thus approaching those of Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook, which belong to the meta group. Another entry in which he denounced WhatsApp as “untrustworthy” showed that Musk apparently wants to compete more with Meta in the future.

Since Musk’s $44 billion Twitter acquisition last year, he’s announced and rolled out numerous changes and new features, often in messy ways. He recently merged Twitter into a new company called X. A kind of all-round app with various functions from messaging to payment services is to be created under this banner.
