Swedish Thunderful Games and developer The Station were able to unveil a new feature in the Steamworld series on Monday. The game is called Steamworld Build, and as the name suggests, the focus is on city building.

On the surface, things are mostly pleasant.

As Thunderful says in a press release, players must build a hangout for more and more residents. You must gather resources, keep people alive and expand the city with houses, shops, workplaces and train stations.

Standard fare for a city-building game, in other words, but that’s just above ground. Players also get to burrow beneath the earth’s surface. Here you can extract ore and more valuable resources, but in return there are several challenges to tackle.

Down in the game’s mines, things suddenly get a little scarier.

The developer describes the underground side of Steamworld Build as an homage to Dungeon Keeper. Here, the game becomes more tower defense-like, and you have to build cannons and other defense mechanisms to fight off monsters that aren’t too happy about you disturbing them.

You can see a taste of the Steamworld Build in the trailer at the top of the article. Those who would rather test the experience for themselves can alternatively check out a demo for the game, which is available via Steam now.

Steamworld Build is being developed for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.
