According to the police, there are no longer any activists in the houses in Lützerath or on the roofs of the buildings. A spokesman told a dpa reporter this afternoon. The clearing of the district of Erkelenz in the Rhenish lignite mining area is thus progressing. A tunnel in which two climate activists were holed up and several tree houses still have to be cleared.

In the meantime, the climate activist Greta Thunberg has arrived in Lützerath. She called for resistance to the dredging of the hamlet by the energy giant RWE. “When governments and corporations destroy the environment (…), people fight back,” said the Swede.

She has been observing the situation in the town on the edge of the North Rhine-Westphalian opencast lignite mine for a long time, said Thunberg, who launched the “Fridays for Future” movement. She will also take part in a demonstration to preserve Lützerath tomorrow, she confirmed.

The energy giant RWE wants to demolish the hamlet in order to be able to excavate the lignite beneath the village. Lützerath has been cleared by strong police forces since Wednesday.
