There is only one season of One Piece on Netflix so far, a second one has just been announced. Nevertheless, the makers of the live-action adaptation are already planning far into the future: after all, there will be at least six seasons, in the best case scenario even 12!

Of course, the very first season prepares for the future of the Straw Hat Pirates. And that doesn’t mean the hard-to-miss teasers for ship’s doctor and moose-man Tony Chopper or the Marine Captain Smoker. A very specific detail is already laying the foundation for a story arc that shouldn’t come until season 3 or 4 at the earliest.

What exactly is it about? In episode 5 of One Piece, Zoro (Mackenyu) is in a coma after his duel with Dracule Mihawk (Steven John Ward) and is struggling with serious injuries. So that Zorro doesn’t die, the head chef of the Baratie Zeff (Craig Fairbrass) advises the Straw Hat Pirates to anchor the swordsman in the land of the living by telling stories.

Nami (Emily Rudd) reads him the fairy tale about him Adventure Noland who claims to have discovered an entire city made of gold 400 years ago. According to legend, Noland also reported this to his king, but when he wanted to lead him to the city after an exhausting and costly journey, it suddenly seemed to be swallowed up by the earth.

Noland is then condemned by his king as a liar and executed, while there is actually a completely different secret behind the golden city: The city called Shandora actually exists, but the entire section of the island was destroyed by a gigantic jet of water (the so-called Knock Up Stream) catapulted into the sky.

Shandora thus became part of the sky island of Skypia, where the Straw Hat Pirates end up in chapters 237-302 of the manga original. Luffy, Nami, Zorro and Co. are drawn into a civil war between the residents of Skypia: the brutal and extremely powerful god Enel subjugates the residents of the sky island, who are now trying to rise up against his cult regime.

The Adventure of the Straw Hat Pirates is the third major arc of One Piece after the East Blue and Alabasta Saga. In the Netflix series, this could be dealt with in the third or fourth season – depending on how long the live-action adaptation spends on the previous story sections.

What does the future hold for the Netflix series One Piece?

Of course, at the moment it is not officially confirmed that One Piece will even have a third and fourth season – even if those responsible for the Netflix series are at least already planning for it.

Recently, at least the second season was officially confirmedwhich will still take a while to arrive: First, the ongoing Hollywood strike has to be resolved, then it will take at least another year to 18 months until new episodes of One Piece continue.
