French children are not equal in the face of school segregation. Long presented as a characteristic of large cities, the lack of social diversity in schools and colleges is a scourge that in fact affects the majority of the first 130 French cities, with the exception of the small and medium-sized prefectures of the south-west and the east-central France. That said, the extent and the methods of this segregation vary a lot from one city to another, as we will see in the maps that follow.

To carry out this work, the “Obs” relied on the social positioning indices (IPS), which the Ministry of National Education was obliged to make public this fall following an appeal by journalist Alexandre Léchenet before the Administrative Court. These IPS make it possible to know the average sociology of an establishment. Each parent is assigned a score according to their profession and the average cultural and financial capital attached by INSEE to said profession. Highly qualified CSPs + peak at 179. And the unemployed who have never worked can go down to 38. Once the scores have been assigned, the ministry calculates an IPS for each establishment, the average being 103 at the national level.
