Ozempic is a drug indicated in Brazil for insulin control in people with type 2 diabetes. However, one of the effects of the drug is to make the patient feel less hungry — which is why it began to be used off-label as an alternative for those who want to lose weight. But nutritionists warn that, without specialized monitoring, use can cause malnutrition.

With the appetite cut, many patients simply forget to eat, or make poor nutritious choices, which can cause health problems. “Patients who come to the office with an indication to use Ozempic are accompanied with very well-calculated diets so that they do not suffer from nutrient insufficiency”, explains nutritionist Thaílla Fontenele, from Brasília. She says that some diabetic patients who use the drug even set alarm clocks to remind themselves to eat.

The medicine also changes the way food is absorbed by the body, contributing to the problem. “Those who take it on their own end up exposing themselves to the risk and do not see that weight loss can be accompanied by malnutrition”, she says.

symptoms of malnutrition

Malnutrition is often evident in the body, with loss of muscle, fat and bones increasingly apparent. The condition can also cause:

  1. Extreme tiredness, with lack of energy to carry out everyday tasks;
  2. Dry and brittle skin and hair;
  3. Constant feeling of cold;
  4. Diarrhea and nausea;
  5. Dysregulation of the menstrual cycle in women;
  6. Irritability frames;
  7. Liquid retention.

In more serious cases that do not receive medical assistance, malnutrition can lead to starvation that leads to system failure and even death.

Other side effects

Among other risks that the use of medication brings, the nutritionist highlights the danger of acute pancreatitis and the rebound effect that ends up leading the individual to gain even more weight. “I have patients who took the medicine on their own and ended up developing hypoglycemia, with constant weakness, cold sweats, nausea and tremors,” she says.

The use of the medicine can lead to a loss of fat so fast that it causes the “Ozempic face”, a general sagging of the skin that also happens on the face. In addition, semaglutide was associated by users with manifestations of strange dreams that may be linked to the increased energy expenditure caused by the medication.
