Presidents ask Biden to intercede with the IMF in favor of Argentina

MEXICO CITY (apro).- The presidents of Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Paraguay sent a letter to US President Joe Biden this Thursday so that Washington can convince the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to accept the restructuring plan of debt presented to him by the Argentine government of Alberto Fernández.

In their letter, the left-wing leaders appealed to Biden’s “empathy and commitment” and asked him, “with respect and affection”, for his support for the Fernández government in its negotiations with the international organization, which they accused of maintaining a position of “inflexibility”.

The letter, signed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his five South American counterparts, states that the crisis that Argentina is going through derives from an over-indebtedness contracted by the Mauricio Macri administration before the IMF, which was combined with a drought, which generated a loss of 20% of the country’s exports.

“Argentina has asked the IMF for a review that allows it to overcome the difficulties that this atypical year presents and that serves as a bridge until various ongoing projects mature, particularly those related to energy and mining, which will have a significant impact on the balance of country’s payments,” said the presidents.
