The current first secretary of the party is renewed at the head of his political formation. At the end of the second round, he and his competitor, Nicolas-Mayer-Rossignol had claimed victory.

At the end of the second round of the 80th congress of the Socialist Party, the militants preferred the current first secretary, Olivier Faure (50.83%) to his rival to take the head of the movement, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol (49.17 %), according to results transmitted by the party to the press. The gap separating the two candidates is very small: 393 votes.

The mayor of Rouen disputes these results. “The socialist activists have placed us in the lead at least 50.5% against 49.5% for the outgoing leadership”, he wrote in a press release this Friday. He “requests that the verification committee meet this afternoon in order to validate the ballot”. “No final result can obviously be proclaimed without validation by the commission of verification. I ask that the choice of the militants is simply respected”, insists Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol.

“Trumpization”

During the night from Thursday to Friday, the two claimants had both claimed victory. Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol had drawn the first, writing with his supporters: “Have no doubt. We have won. They can no longer go back to the score”. The Rouen city councilor’s camp added:

“We are facing an attempt to destabilize and trumpify our friends.”

In their sights, Olivier Faure, who had also claimed victory a few minutes earlier. He then declared on his social networks: “The socialist militants expressed this evening by a clear vote their will to continue the gathering of the left and the ecologists by making sure that I am the one who leads this great formation that is the PS “.

The future of Nupes, central question of this congress

The two camps had accused each other of irregularities in the votes and had announced appeals and requests for cancellations of votes in sections. During the first round, “at least a thousand suspicious votes”, had been counted according to an internal note consulted by The Express. But the teams of the three candidates in the race – the third was Hélène Geoffroy, mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin – had preferred to close their eyes so as not to tarnish the image of the party with a fist and a rose.

The stake of this congress concerned in particular the future of Nupes. Olivier Faure defends his strategy of an “exclusive” left alliance, the only way according to him to block the right and the far right in 2027. Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, more reserved on this agreement, does not hide his reluctance vis-à-vis the party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon. He has the support of the third candidate, the mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin Hélène Geoffroy, clearly hostile to Nupes.

The final results will be announced after the vote of the delegates of the Congress of Marseilles on January 27, 28 and 29.
