Queens residents will be able to decide new bus routes

Queens residents will have a new opportunity to weigh in on a new plan to redesign public bus routes in their borough.

This two years after the MTA ruled out a complete restructuring after listening to rider feedback.

The redesign includes a $30 million investment that eliminates or moves stops to increase bus speeds by an average of 20 seconds per stop.

However, 83 percent of users will have the same whereabouts.

The redesign would increase the number of routes from 113 to 121.

The president of the MTA, Jano Lieber, assures that buses must operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Among the new routes in the plan is Q98 in northeast Queens, which will run from Main Street in Flushing to Metropolitan Avenue, and Q105 will run along 31st Street, to improve accessibility and connections.

A new route, the Q51 in southwest Queens, will connect the Rockaway Boulevard Subway station on the A line to the Cambria Heights area.

And the Q5 will be split into 3 routes, including the Q86 and 87 to provide more frequent service from Jamaica to transportation deserts such as Rosedale and Brookville. There will also be a new express bus from southeast Queens to lower Manhattan, the QM65.

The public can comment on the proposal on the MTA website. An online and in-person hearing are also planned.

This process is expected to be completed in 2025.
