Last year, the federal government spent 339.8 million euros on looking after refugees. This emerges from a query from the Ministry of the Interior to the FPÖ MP Hannes Amesbauer. However, the ministry emphasizes that the costs have been significantly reduced compared to previous years.

The average value was calculated on the basis of 42,095 asylum seekers. This resulted in a good 22 euros per day per refugee.

If you look at the total expenditure, these were in some cases significantly below the previous years. In 2019, for example, they amounted to 353 million and in 2018, when the Interior Ministry was managed by today’s FPÖ boss Herbert Kickl, almost 466 million. However, at that time more than 61,000 people had to be looked after.

Personnel costs the largest share

Large chunks account for personnel costs with a good 27 million and catering with more than 20 million. Rents and operating costs, like security payments by third parties, each cost more than twelve million.

The costs for social security and medical care for refugees were relatively high in the previous year, namely EUR 5.7 million and EUR 3.8 million respectively. 4.7 million euros were spent on transport as part of the basic service. 2.3 million euros flowed into pocket money.
