The Governor of New York, Kathy Hochulreported that several highways in the area most affected by the winter storm elliot were reopened, after registering the meteorological phenomenon called “bomb cyclone”.
The official added that the border crossings with Canada were also reopened, while work continues to reopen the remaining roads in Erie County, which has registered 28 of the more than 50 deaths in the United States.
Personnel from the Department of Transport and Highways, as well as the emergency services continue to clear the roads of snow and remove abandoned vehicles, so that the rest of the roads can reopen as soon as possible.
Today we are reopening major highways across Western New York — border crossings, the @NYSThruwayI-290, I-990, & Routes 400 & 219.
This is a sign that we are finally turning the corner on this once-in-a-generation storm. Please continue to follow local advisories & stay safe.

According to Hochul, other Erie roads are expected to reopen on Wednesday, although the driving ban persists in its main city and the one most affected by the storm, Buffalo, according to the EFE agency.
“With the reopening of the main highways in western New York, we are leaving the storm behind,” said the governor before warning that this does not mean “we can lower our guard” since the region will still take several days to return back to normal.
The freezing storm that has affected the country since last week has caused 60 percent of the US population to have faced some type of advisory or warning related to winter weather in recent days.

It has also caused thousands of canceled flights and homes without power. The reopening of the roads “is still good news,” said Hochul, who urged motorists to drive carefully and follow the rules of the road.
For his part, Marc Poloncarz, Erie’s top political officer, said in a tweet that many of the shelters where numerous people had sought refuge are reporting that they are returning to their homes and has also assured that there is no shortage of products in stores.
