Ciudad Juárez (Mexico), Apr 10 (EFE).- Hundreds of migrants arrived on Monday at the Paso del Norte International Bridge, in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez, northern Mexico, after rumors spread that today they could enter the city of El Paso, Texas, in the United States, and request political asylum.

The situation caused the crossing to be closed to both pedestrians and vehicles on the Mexican and US sides.

Among the same refugees they commented that the company Viber, through social networks, was the one that began to spread the false information. Last month, the international crossing had already been taken over by undocumented immigrants from this city, due to the same situation.

“I was lining up, the migrants themselves told us that we could cross, so I came here with my granddaughter to see if this was true,” Magaly Figuera, a migrant from Venezuela, told EFE who went to the place with the hope that the dispersed information was true

She explained that Venezuelans want to work and, for her, her 42, 40 and 38-year-old daughters are waiting for her in the United States. Magaly currently lives in the city in fear due to the actions of the immigration authorities, in addition, she is sleeping on the street.

Another case is that of Mileidy Ortiz, from Colombia, who said that she received the information through social networks.

“(Companion migrants) sent us a message via WhatsApp that we could go through and not. The page to make appointments does not work and that is why we came, we thought that we could pass ”, she expressed.

She comes alone and also sleeps on the street. Faced with this situation, she asked the authorities to treat migrants with more humanity. “I come with dreams and goals. Migrants are human beings and God sees how they treat us.”

According to Mexican civil organizations, 2022 was the most tragic year for migrants in Mexico, as some 900 died trying to cross without documents from the country to the United States.

The region is experiencing a record migratory flow, with 2.76 million undocumented immigrants detained at the United States border with Mexico in fiscal year 2022.
