The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe weather watch for parts of Virginia and Maryland, including St. Mary County, Spotsylvania County, and Fredericksburg. The watch is in effect until 9 pm Damaging wind gusts and large hail are possible, the agency warned.
The Weather Authority forecasts the greatest chance for thunderstorms to be along and east of the I-95 corridor and on the Delmarva Peninsula in the mid-afternoon to late afternoon. Take the umbrella with you.
Temperatures will reach 80 degrees and an increase in humidity is expected. Storm chances will come with the passage of a cold front that should hit I-95 between 2 and 6 p.m. The sky will begin to clear rapidly after the system passes, and most of the DC metropolitan area will be dry between 7 and 8 p.m.
High pressure will build in the area over the weekend and keep chances of rain away until Monday afternoon. Saturday looks sunny with very little humidity and a steady north-westerly wind.
Sunday will be just as nice but without the breeze. Humidity will begin to rise Monday as temperatures approach the 90s.
There will still be a chance of rain every day for the next week, but the latest forecast models are trending drier. Thursday they showed the possible fall of 2-3 inches of rain over the next week, but today they show 1-2″ max.
