Shohei Ohtani on course to break an American League record that has not been reached in 45 years

Shohei Ohtani’s season is being worthy of a true MVP, last Thursday he connected his home run number 40Added to his .310 average, 82 RBIs and 3.32 ERA and 9 wins in pitching, the Japanese is called to close a dream campaign.

Among the records that Ohtani could break there is the one that just last season imposed Aaron Judge with 62 home runs. Well, the Japanese with 40 home runs and with 50 games left in the regular season, has a high chance of surpassing that mark.

But beyond home runs, Ohtani is heavily looming over a record that has not been reached in the American League for 45 years and is in the total bases category.

Currently Ohtani leads this department with 276 total basesvery close even to his mark from last year, which was 306. In this category, the magic number stands at 400 total bases, since very few players have been able to pass this barrier.

The last to achieve it were Barry Bonds, Todd Helton, Sammy Sosa and Luis González in the 2001 season. But it is more curious that No player in the American League has managed to reach this figure since Jim Rice in 1978.

Ohtani is only 124 total bases away from reaching the mythical number of 400. The single-season record in this department is held by Babe Ruth with 457 in the 1921 season.

If this unique record is reached, there would be one more compelling reason for the Japanese Ohtani to position himself as the clear favorite to win the MVP award of the season and the second since his arrival in the Major LeaguesWell, in the 2021 campaign he already awarded one.
