Smoke from the fires in Canada reaches the Spanish Atlantic archipelago of the Canary Islands

Spain.- The smoke from the hundred long fires that ravage the forests of Canada reached the Spanish Atlantic archipelago of the Canary Islands this Wednesday, especially the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where the aerosols generated by the burning are added to the episode of haze in which is immersed

The territorial delegate of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the Canary Islands, explained that these aerosols moved depending on the weather conditions and atmospheric circulation, first passing through the Iberian Peninsula, especially through the Spanish regions of Galicia, Madrid and the neighboring country, Portugal, and now moving towards the Canary Islands.

He added that this Thursday could be the day on which this conjunction of haze and ash particles is more pronounced, while the Canarian regional government, with jurisdiction over air quality, tries to determine what proportion of desert aerosols are generated by the haze and what proportion of particles are linked to the Canadian fires.

“In principle, we anticipate that the haze will subside from Friday, when there is a change in air mass with a drop in temperature,” said the person in charge of Aemet in the Canary Islands, who added that this will help to know what the contribution of the fires and what effect haze has.

The smoke and ashes have already dyed several North American cities, such as New York, orange and have now landed in the Canary Islands.especially on the island of Lanzarote, where air quality is moderate, with a value of 74 -the lower the value, the better the quality-, according to the Canary Islands Government station that measures this parameter in Arrecife.
