Gene Roddenberry’s universe is known to be a fairly straightforward moral matter, at least initially: the Federation is beyond reproach and to be seen as good in every way. This idealism is a commendable approach and has also ensured that Star Trek stands for tolerance and charity – but of course this has little to do with reality.
Roddenberry’s heirs also know this today and have long since added various shades of gray to Star Trek. This includes Section 31, which made its debut in the 1998 episode “Inquisition” of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and most recently also played an important role in Star Trek: Discovery.

Because this department of the Federation apparatus is a kind of CIA of the future: Although Section 31 also fights for the Federation, it resorts to means that are seldom compatible with democratic and moral standards. In Discovery, Section 31 is inextricably linked to one character, namely Emperor Philippa Georgiou. Played by recently Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, this was a key part of Discovery’s second season.
Even then – i.e. in 2019 – there were considerations to make Section 31 the focus of a separate series, but later the project fell silent. But now a film has been confirmed – which is certainly related to Yeoh’s Oscar win (via Ars Technica). “I am thrilled to be returning to my Star Trek family and to the role I have loved for so long. Section 31 has been close to my heart since I took on the role of the Philippa took over,” Yeoh wrote in a statement. She says how important it is never to give up on your dreams: “We can’t wait to tell you what’s to come. And until then: live long and in peace (unless Empress Georgiou decrees otherwise)! ”
Details about the film are yet to be revealed, but a first description of the new film says it will follow part of Georgiou’s career within Section 31 as she “confronts the sins of her past”. It’s planned for streaming, so expect it to be available via Paramount+.
