Survey: More than half of Cubans want to leave the island

The survey was carried out between March 23 and April 8 by the independent pollster Cubadata, which included 1,776 people from all the country’s provinces.

57.5% responded that they intend to emigrate abroad, 25.3% said that they are not sure about doing it and only 17.2% do not plan to leave Cuba.

77.4% of those surveyed were between 22 and 55 years of age, 44% had studied at the university, and 45% were workers in state centers.

When asked if any family member or close acquaintance has emigrated from Cuba in the last 12 months, 81% answered yes.

Among the main reasons that Cubans have for emigrating, 52% mentioned in first place the country’s economic crisis.

The lack of food, with 39%, was in second place, while 37% considered that there is no future in the country.

The lack of medicines and health services (30.7%), the lack of job opportunities (25%), the lack of freedoms (23.5%), political persecution (9.4%), and insecurity were also mentioned as causes for emigrating. and violence (6.5%).

And when asked what destination he would choose to emigrate, a43.1% of those surveyed indicated the United States, where the largest Cuban community is based.

13% said they preferred to go to Europe, 9.6% responded that they would go to any destination where a possibility arises and only 2.2% pointed to Latin America.

ANDn fiscal year 2022, 224,607 Cubans arrived in the United States, an average of 615 per day. That figure is almost six times the amount of 2021 (39,303)and 16 times that of 2020 (14,015).
