Néstor Gorosito is very close to ceasing to be the gymnastics coach. A situation that was expected, that could be seen coming, and from these pages it was anticipated: the relationship between the leadership and the coaching staff was tense, to say the least, due to a contract signed by the previous CD and, they say, “it is priceless ”.
The coach had signed a contract renewal with the now ex-Albiazul president, Gabriel Pellegrino, which is priceless for Lobo at the moment. It begins to apply from next Sunday, January 1, and extends until December 31, 2023.
The brand new Board of Directors headed by Mariano Cowen, who is now four weeks in charge of the club, immediately saw that he was not going to be able to deal with what was signed. From the first presentation meeting there was a lot of counterpoint between the DT and the leadership, because they turned their thumbs down on many of Pipo’s requests, with the aim of starting to cut expenses.
The debt with the squad and coaching staff, the inhibitions, the reinforcements that will not arrive, the players that will not continue and the non-start of the preseason on December 5, were alienating the parties, in addition to the height of the coach’s contract and his collaborators.
On Tuesday at the Hippodrome there was a meeting that was described as “very bad”. Yesterday, due to DT’s personal problems, the key meeting was postponed for today. In Gymnastics they want him to accept a payment plan for his departure, but Pipo is not willing to give up money and promises to start the preseason next Tuesday.
After his arrival in August 2021, his first link will end this Saturday, December 31, but last October he decided to renew the contract with DT, and Pipo grabbed hold of it to arrange an exit. Specifically, they should pay him a few months (it is said that there are three) and that is precisely what could be arranged by word of mouth yesterday afternoon. In other words, Gorosito is leaving, but the club will have to pay him part of that new contract.
And there the whole discussion was focused, to be able to fix something that Gimnasia could comply with and that Gorosito accepted. The talks were intense but with things very clear, the cycle would not continue.
In this sense, at least verbally, an agreement was reached to, on the one hand, comply with the debt that the club currently has with the coaching staff for these last months of 2022; and on the other hand, pay a percentage of the new contract that Pipo demands to leave.
It is important to remember that along with Pipo Gorosito, there are also his two field assistants, Gustavo Zapata and Jorge Borelli; the physical trainer, Sebastián Somoza; and the goalkeeping coach Marcelo Villasanti.
Weeks ago, in statements to a sports cable program, the coach, after his first talk with Cowen, made it clear that he had rejected two opportunities for teams in our country and one from abroad by giving his word to Gymnastics, and that he should also answer for other people by having people in charge, who depend on him to work, who are neither more nor less than the aforementioned collaborators.
What must be made clear is that the Board of Directors explained to him that his new contract was not going to be able to pay, and that there was no other situation behind it.
What’s more, both Cowen and the 1st Vice President, Juan Pablo Arrién, have repeatedly said that due to their work, Gorosito had earned the renewal of the contract.
In other words, there is no conflict that the leadership does not want it, but simply that they cannot pay for the new contract.
The coach also understood it, and that is why the meetings on Tuesday afternoon and today were held, seeking to find the best possible way out, so that Lobo could comply and that DT was satisfied with the arrangement. For now there is no agreement.
The idea was to be able to finish shaping the start as soon as possible, to plan what is to come with the preseason, which for now will start on Tuesday, January 3.
It wouldn’t be neat to start the preseason with Gorosito next week without resolving this situation, with a coach leaving or about to leave. Now he will have to put everything discussed on paper, and sign the corresponding papers. Will the DT accept it?
And now who will take charge of the professional staff?
The other issue to resolve in these hours and almost urgently, is to know who will replace Pipo. On the one hand, the first reaction, almost as a reflex, was to look at the Reserve.
In other words, offer the position to Sebastián Romero, who has been in charge of the youth team together with Nicolás Cabrera.
Since the idea is to play with what there is, and within the squad there are many youth soccer players who have passed through the hands of Chirola and Nico, for many it is the best option at the moment.
For another part of the leadership, it is best not to “burn” Chirola at this time and go out looking for a coach to take charge at this stage where everything is being rearranged.
Let’s remember that Chirola Romero already started the preseason weeks ago with the Reserve group, training every morning at Estancia Chica. For now, Romero is focused on youth work and no one has offered him anything at all.
Logically, when the rumor of Pipo’s departure began to spread yesterday, the businessmen began to do their job and try to come up with options to direct the Wolf.
Although there is not much time, there are hours to think carefully about the steps to follow because this squad will have to face no more and no less than three competitions (local tournament, Copa Sudamericana and Copa Argentina).
