The FGJCDMX boasts a 42% reduction in femicides in two years

MEXICO CITY (apro).- In the last two years, the crime of femicide has decreased by 42%, according to Ernestina Godoy, head of the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office (FGJCDMX).

In the monthly progress report of the Declaration of the Alert for Violence against Women, it was reported that the proposal to standardize the criminal offense of femicide in the laws of all federal entities was approved in the National Conference for the Procurement of Justice (CNPJ). .

The capital prosecutor explained that, from January 1 to June 15, 2023, 44 people accused of femicides have been linked to the process. “Number much higher than the femicides we have this year,” she said.

He added that, from January 1, 2019 to June 15, 2023, 11,609 aggressors of women have been linked to the process: “This includes all cases of all types of gender violence, ranging from harassment, abuse, violence family to femicide”.

To complement the work of the Secretariat for Women, Godoy Ramos announced the implementation in “all Agencies of the Public Ministry” of a Risk Screening of cases of violence against women committed by their partners or ex-partners with which “it will be possible to analyze the risk in which the victims find themselves and to be able to identify the most adequate protection measure for each case”.

He also said that as of July 1, the Protection Measures Unit will be put into operation 24 hours a day in favor of women, girls, boys, adolescents, and the elderly.

This Unit will supervise the Public Ministry agencies so that they determine the protection measures according to the result of the Risk Screening and are proportional to the situation that the victim is facing, according to the official.

Homologation of femicide

The head of the FGJCDMX announced that, as a result of the work tables at the National Conference for the Procurement of Justice (CNPJ), the country’s prosecutors and attorneys, headed by prosecutor Alejandro Gertz Manero, unanimously approved the proposal to standardize the criminal type of feminicide in all the laws of all the federal entities.

Godoy Ramos added: “In the coming days, we will be meeting to work on this initiative and we hope that our local legislatures will help us, because we are certain that, having all the gender reasons that can be objectively verified, we are working to reduce the impunity”.
