There are spoilers for episode five of The Last of Us in this notice. If you haven’t checked out the latest episode yet, you should do so before reading any further.

As you know, The Last of Us fans got to enjoy perhaps the most disgusting infected to date in the form of Bloater, who appeared in the latest episode. This primordial and gigantic Clicker is one of the most memorable things in the show so far, and it took a lot of work to bring the creature to life. Not only did the creators need a two-meter-tall actor (British Adam Basil) to make the creature terrifying, but they put him in a suit weighing around 40 kilograms to give him a more powerful aesthetic.

Prosthetic designer Barry Gower explained the process behind all of this in the latest Youtube video Inside the Episode, where he stated that the creators made a “full replica” of Basil’s body which they then used to model the Bloater prosthetics. Then they used foam rubber and foam latex to make the mushroom monster that then attacks in episode five.
