Difficult to miss, as the series is talked about at the start of the year. On Monday January 16, 2023, the Prime Video platform released the first episode of the new HBO series, The Last of Us. A program that takes viewers into a post-apocalyptic universe ravaged by a pandemic caused by a fungus, cordyceps. The Last of Us : a successful video game
Before being brought to the small screen, The Last of Us is a video game diptych, exclusively released on PlayStation in 2013, then 2020. More recently, on September 2, 2022, players were able to discover a graphic overhaul of the game of The Last of Us Part I, on PlayStation 5. Endearing and charismatic heroes
The Last of Us invites us to follow two endearing main characters who contribute to the popularity of the two games. On the one hand, Joel, a fifty-year-old marked by the life and death of his daughter at the start of the epidemic. On the other, Ellie, a fourteen-year-old teenager born in the post-epidemic world. An orphan, she was brought up in a military boarding school and dreams of seeing the outside world. During the adventure, our two heroes display a certain complementarity through the writing of remarkably deep and accurate dialogues which come to dress strong and moving sequences.
A progressive game
In its sequel, The Last of Us: Pt II, released in 2020, Ellie has grown into a young adult. The opportunity for the creators to further explore his character, in particular the themes concerning his sexual orientation. Sony has thus chosen to show a love affair between Ellie and a woman. A narrative bias welcomed by many gamers, but which can prove to be divisive, especially in certain countries. Besides the Middle East, in Russia the game is censored because it is considered LGBT propaganda. According to Geek Diary, this prohibition is part of the application of a new Russian law which aims to limit, according to them, the indoctrination of Western cultural values. Regardless, the game has attracted millions of fans around the world.
