A new infected was introduced in episode 5 of the series The Last of Us. This is the colossus, a very important stage of infection.
The Last of Us is certainly not a work of “zombies”, since we speak rather of infected. But, the fact remains that these humans zombified by the Cordyceps put immense pressure on us. This is the case of the clicker, in particular, blind, but sensitive to the slightest sound.
Episode 5 of the series, broadcast this Saturday February 11, 2023, introduces a new type of infected, already heavily teased, and which has the appearance of a real monster: the colossus (bloater).
The colossus has superhuman strength
We know a lot about this infected, very present in games. For a human contaminated with Cordyceps to reach the stage of “colossus”, he must have been infected for at least a decade. It is an additional step, after the clacker.
The fungus has grown profusely all over their bodies, not just the skull. They are sort of small successive pockets of Cordyceps, solid, producing a form of massive natural armor multiplying its corpulence – hence its name. The colossus is aggressive and has a strength far superior to humans and other infected. This is also why Perry orders Kathleen to flee: it is impossible to escape a colossus if it grabs you, since it simply crushes its prey; and due to his armor, emptying the magazine on him is not fully effective.
They are blind, like clickers, and therefore locate their prey by echolocation. But, it will not have escaped you that their head is even more deformed; their echolocation is therefore less reliable. It utters a castling, guttural sound.
In the game, the colossus also has an offensive particularity: in the pockets where the fungus develops, there is a deadly mycotoxin that it can launch against the characters. This element does not seem to be present in the series.
