The SNTE defends the new textbooks: "nobody will be able to destroy them"

MEXICO CITY (apro).– The National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) today defended the new free textbooks and disqualified those who, it said, are calling for the “burning” and “destruction” of this educational material that it is planned to be used in the next school year, which begins at the end of August.

“We reject the calls for the ‘burning’ or ‘destruction’ of Free Textbooks, it is irresponsibility turned into political and cultural violence,” the SNTE said in a press release.

And he assured that, in order to “position themselves with a view to the next elections”, there are “sectors of opinion, political groups and ideological factions that intend to use the situation to attack the federal government”.

He made the following call:

“That no political force, ideological faction or interest group intends to turn public schools and education into the field of their disputes.

“That they leave education alone and free from its violence.”

The textbooks – emphasized the union – “are a historic achievement, a public policy that must be kept out of partisan disputes. This achievement has transcended and will transcend electoral situations”.

He also recalled that, since its founding in 1943, the SNTE assumed the commitment to “defend education and public schools,” and in this context, textbooks, along with teachers, “represent the greatest social and institution of Mexico.

And he concluded: “No one will be able to violate the national educational system. Nobody is going to weaken the public school. Nobody will be able to destroy the Free Textbooks”.
