The US expresses its concern about the situation in the Ethiopian regions of Amhara and Oromia

MADRID, 5 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The spokesman for the United States Department of State, Matthew Miller, expressed his concern this Friday about the situation in the Amhara and Oromia regions (in northern Ethiopia), after the government of the country declared this Friday the state of emergency in Amhara after months of confrontation between the state security forces and the Fano militias.

Secretary Antony Blinken held a telephone conversation this Friday with the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, in which he not only expressed his concern but also highlighted “the progress in the implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in northern Ethiopia.

Blinken and Ahmed have addressed “the advancement of peace, prosperity and stability” in the country and have considered the possibility of implementing a humanitarian aid distribution system with “reinforced supervision to meet the shared objective of restarting aid food as soon as possible.

Likewise, as far as the Horn of Africa is concerned, the state representative has revealed the “full support” of the US government for a diplomatic resolution on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.”

“Fostering peace and prosperity throughout the Horn of Africa is a principle of United States foreign policy,” Blinken wrote on his X social network account, formerly known as Twitter.

The Ethiopian authorities declared a state of emergency this Friday in the Amhara region, in the north of the country, in response to months of clashes between state security forces and the Fano militias, a heterogeneous armed group that collaborated with the Amhara troops during the last Tigray war until their relationship deteriorated due to disagreements over the management of regional security.

Fighting has intensified in recent days after Fano militias seized control of the airport in the holy city of Lalibela, a World Heritage Site for its ancient 11th-century Coptic monasteries. International embassies, such as the Spanish one, have asked citizens to refrain from traveling to the region.
