We are going to talk about the “InvertedJenny”, a American postage stamp which, in the Italian version, is better known as the “Jenny overturned”. This specimen was made in the first decades of the 1900s (the exact year is 1918) to be used only for the airmail service. Its face value was 24 cents, a very high figure for the time. But why does he now have a priceless value? Simple, for oneminting error. But let’s go step by step and analyze its characteristics.
The characteristics of the Inverted Jenny
Originally, it was decided to issue this stamp in 3 different colors to make any forgery difficult. In particular:
- White background;
- red frame;
- blue central image.
It is clear that these 3 elements recall the colors of the American flag.

However, it happened that various specimens came out upside down because of the incorrect positioning of the card inside the machine. Because of this mistake, several sheets were destroyed. But, at least one sheet containing 100 pieces arrived unharmed in the hands of a post office employee who decided to sell it whole. For several years, this sheet was sold as single piece. At some point, however, the last of the owners had the brilliant idea of divide it into several blocks. In fact, she had had the brilliant intuition that he could have obtained a higher income.
And indeed, so it was: a single block of 4 Inverted Jenny earned him 2.9 million eurosaka, more or less 700,000 euros for each specimen!
