Traffic stop ends in chase and shooting in McAllen

A suspect is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head after being involved in a chase and shootout early Sunday morning with McAllen police officers.

The incident occurred around 3:38 a.m. Sunday near 1700 North 23rd Street, the McAllen Police Department said in a statement.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Ronaldo Alvarado, was driving a maroon Dodge Charger when he was stopped at a routine traffic stop by police.

According to the information provided by the police, before the officers got out of their patrol car, Alvarado began shooting at them, who responded in the same way.

Then the suspect, already apparently shot, began driving slowly south. The suspect’s vehicle continued its slow southbound drive to a private parking lot and came to a complete stop after hitting a fence approximately four blocks south of the traffic stop site.

When officers approached the car, Alvarado was slumped over with an apparent head injury, according to the authorities’ news release. An officer broke the glass on the passenger side of the vehicle to provide emergency medical assistance and saw the suspect’s gun next to the man. The suspect appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the temple.

The injured man was taken to a local hospital for emergency medical attention.

Alvarado is a Brownsville resident. At the moment it is unknown what type of charges the detainee could face.
