The goal was ambitious: by 2026, every fourth parking space in Berlin-Mitte should disappear. That’s what the Greens and SPD laid down in a joint agreement after the last election. But it didn’t say exactly how that was supposed to work. Therefore, the district council voted on Thursday for a timetable.

The district office should “create a timeline,” according to the SPD application. For this purpose, a map should be shown every six months, where how many parking spaces will be eliminated and by what measures. Instead of cars, there should be space for green spaces, seating and bike racks. This increases safety for pedestrians and creates a better quality of stay, argued the Greens and SPD.

Criticism came from the CDU. “The people who live here want to continue to park their car in the district and not somewhere on the outskirts,” said the deputy Martin Leuschner.

The transport policy spokesman for the FDP, Bastian Roet, surprisingly voted in favor of the application. Not because he was in favor of it, as he explained. A public map would enable local residents to deal with this in good time.
