During a test, American Marines managed to thwart the vigilance of an artificial intelligence by hiding under a cardboard box. A technique that Metal Gear Solid players know well for having practiced it many times.
Metal Gear Solid can be a great help in playing around with the AI. Editor-in-chief of the defense section of The EconomistShashank Joshi shared some good leaves from the book on Wednesday Four Battlegrounds: Power in the Age of Artificial Intelligence which is scheduled for release on February 28.

While the US military is convinced that AI can fight humans, an anecdote has sparked amused reactions in the gaming community.
Two Marines evade an AI by impersonating Metal Gear Solid
In the book, we learn that eight Marines managed to deceive an artificial intelligence targeting system using unusual techniques. Two of them notably hid under a box for 300 meters. “You could hear them laughing all the time. Like Bugs Bunny in a Looney Tune cartoon, sneaking around Elmer Fudd in a cardboard box”says a witness of the scene for the less comical.
The author explains that the AI in question had only been trained to detect walking humans. The techniques used by the Marines (hiding under a box, dressing up as a tree, doing jumps) were enough to break the algorithm.
Sound familiar? Players who sanded Metal Gear Solid will remember that such a technique has already been proven in the game. Solid Snake and other protagonists could indeed periodically hide under cardboard boxes in order to escape from enemy soldiers.
