Union: Federal government must stem the flow of refugees from Turkey

Rising number of asylum seekers from Turkey not solely due to earthquakes – Union faction accuses Faeser of inaction

Osnabruck. Against the background of sharply increasing numbers of asylum seekers from Turkey, the Union faction calls on the federal government to curb the migration movement. “I expect the federal government to clearly raise this development with our NATO partner Turkey and look for ways to stop it,” said Andrea Lindholz, deputy parliamentary group leader of the Union, of the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). . “The serious increase in asylum seekers from Turkey is worrying. Most of these people have no need for protection.”

The CSU politician points out that the rising number is not only due to the earthquake, since the number of Turkish asylum seekers had already tripled in 2022 compared to the previous year. Lindholz criticized the interior minister: “Ms. Faeser should have taken the initiative with Turkey a long time ago.”

According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, the number of asylum seekers from Turkey rose by 279.7 percent in the first three months of this year compared to the same period last year. A total of 10,267 Turks applied for asylum in Germany in January, February and March. This puts Turkey in third place behind Syria and Afghanistan among the main countries of origin.

According to the BAMF, only 15.7 percent of asylum seekers with a Turkish passport receive protection status. For comparison: the overall protection rate for all countries of origin was 51.7 percent in the first three months of this year.
