A clemency petition has been filed with the Governor of Missouri to prevent the execution of Amber McLaughlin, a transgender woman.

In the absence of leniency, it will be the first to be in the United States. Amber McLaughlin, a 49-year-old transgender woman, is to be executed by injection Tuesday in Missouri for killing a former girlfriend in 2003, the agency reports Associated Press.

Amber McLaughlin’s lawyer, Larry Komp, said a clemency petition was filed with Republican Gov. Mike Parson on the grounds that the death row inmate suffers from brain damage and childhood trauma.

Convicted of rape and murder in 2003

Amber McLauglin was sentenced to death for raping and killing a woman in 2003. According to the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), this will be the first execution of a transgender person in the United States.
