As part of a new product update, Volvo has now optimized the range (WLTP) and charging capabilities of the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge compared to the upcoming model year, with range increased by 66 kilometers in some models (XC40 Recharge AWD with 82 kWh battery).

In addition, the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge offer three new powertrains. These include two rear-wheel-drive models, the first for Volvo to offer them in 25 years, and a newly tuned all-wheel-drive high-performance model. Another first is Volvo’s in-house development of the second-generation permanent magnet electric motor that drives the rear axle of the all-electric C40 and XC40 models.

The return of rear-wheel power sees Volvo starting with two new rear-wheel drive powertrain options, driven by a standard 175 kW permanent-magnet electric motor (e-motor) on rear-drive models, and an upcoming 170 kW single-motor front Compared with the wheel-drive model, its power output has increased by 3%.

In the XC40 Recharge single-motor, the same 69 kWh battery capacity is retained, but improved cooling efficiency means it can now offer greater range and a range of 461km under the WLTP test, up from 425km previously. Meanwhile, the single-motor range of the C40 Recharge has been increased from 438km (WLTP) to 476km. Using a 130 kW DC public fast charger, it takes approximately 34 minutes to accumulate 10-80% of the charge.

If you feel you need more power and range, you can also choose a larger battery and pair it with a more powerful 185 kW permanent magnet electric motor on the rear axle. This second new model is equipped with an 82 kWh battery pack, enabling the XC40 Recharge to have a single-motor range of up to 515 kilometers (WLTP), and the C40 Recharge to have a single-motor range of up to 533 kilometers (WLTP). Charging power has also been increased, as the larger battery pack allows charging at an updated top rate of 200kW DC (previously a maximum of 150kW DC), with a 10-80 per cent charge taking around 28 minutes.

Plug-in hybrid models in Volvo’s 90 and 60 series also get a new two-phase on-board charger, allowing these models to charge at a faster rate (depending on the market). The new on-board charger almost doubles the maximum charging capacity of these models at 6.4 kW.
