Lost Souls in Tokyo

France TV is giving cinema lovers a nice gift with the broadcast of Lost in Translation, the masterpiece of Sofia Coppola. After a first successful attempt in 1999 with Virgin Suicides, the director once again confirmed all her talent with this film carried by Scarlett Johansson, known today for her eclectic filmography and her interpretation of Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as as Bill Murray, an essential comic actor in American cinema, famous, among other things, for his role in the Ghostbusters saga.

In this film, Bill Murray embodies a famous American actor named Bob Harris, who has already lived his best years. Married, father of a child, the fifty-year-old travels to Tokyo to shoot the advertisement for a famous Japanese whiskey. Disillusioned, fleeing a life that no longer satisfies him, alone in a huge luxury hotel and dropped in the middle of a country he knows almost nothing about, Bob Harris quickly meets Charlotte, a young woman just as melancholy as him, who stays in Tokyo while her photographer husband is working. These two people will then enjoy their stay together and find meaning in their existence.

With Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola signs a real nugget, a bittersweet dramatic comedy, which perfectly transcribes human wandering and the feeling of loneliness. A real cinematic gem, and one of the best feature films ever made when it comes to staging the Tokyo megalopolis. To finish convincing you, let’s briefly recall the film’s notes on the various aggregators: 4.5/5 for the press and 3.8/5 for spectators on AlloCiné, 95% and 85% on RottenTomatoes, and finally 91/100 on Metacritic.
