Woodlawn Cemetery to open Celia Cruz mausoleum on 20th anniversary of her death

NEW YORK — The Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, where the remains of Celia Cruz (1925-2003) rest, will open its mausoleum on July 16, as that day marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the “queen of salsa.” , a spokeswoman for the cemetery informed EFE.

Followers of the star, who died on July 16, 2003 after losing his battle against cancer, will be able to pay tribute to the “Guarachera de Cuba” between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., said Barbara Selesky, spokeswoman for the Woodlawn , where the former Fania star rests with her husband, trumpeter Pedro Knight, who died in 2007.

According to Selesky, and as has happened in previous years, that day there will be music by Celia Cruz in the mausoleum.

The tomb of the interpreter of “Life is a carnival” is among the most visited in Woodlawn, which houses some 1,400 majestic private mausoleums and is the final resting place of many celebrities in music, literature, politics, sports or business.

Selesky also indicated that those who come to the Woodlawn by private car may drive from either of the two entrances to the cemetery to the artist’s mausoleum.

On July 16, the traditional Cuban parade in New York, which will depart at noon from 38th Street and Madison Avenue in Manhattan, will also be dedicated to the famous singer.
