Bielefeld.
In recent years, more and more cases of violence in NRW daycare centers have been reported. There was a particularly striking increase in the Rhineland.

According to a newspaper report, the number of reports of violence in kindergartens has skyrocketed in recent years in North Rhine-Westphalia. As reported by the “Neue Westfälische” (Tuesday edition) published in Bielefeld, the numbers of physical violence, educational misconduct and sexual violence have doubled or even tripled.

The statistics of the state youth welfare offices show a particularly striking increase in the Rhineland: While the state youth welfare office responsible here recorded 34 cases of educational misconduct in 2018, it was already 120 in 2020. This number almost doubled in the following year to 222 cases, as the newspaper further reported.

More cases of physical violence and sexual assault

There has also been a sharp increase in physical assault and physical violence: from 42 cases in 2018, the number of reports in the pandemic has climbed steadily to more than double the number in 2021. In the case of sexual assault, the number of cases has fallen from 38 cases in Increased to 76 in 2018.

In the more rural region of Westphalia-Lippe, fewer cases are recorded, but there are also sharp increases here. In the case of inappropriate parenting behavior, according to the responsible state youth welfare office, the reports almost doubled from 2019 to 2021 from 33 to 62. The cases of corporal punishment rose from 22 to 54. Reports of sexual assault rose from 16 to 29.

Increased awareness among parents, educators and porters

According to “Neue Westfälische”, spokesmen for both state youth welfare offices attribute the increase to increased awareness among parents, educators and carriers. This also has to do with a campaign for protection against violence that both offices carried out in 2020. Humiliation, degradation, physical and sexual assaults must be reported to day-care centers as soon as they are suspected. (dpa)
