Vehicle-free streets to celebrate Earth Day

The celebration of car-free day in honor of Mother Earth returns to the city.

And this Saturday dozens of city streets were closed to vehicular traffic in an early celebration of Earth Day.

This annual event seeks to encourage New Yorkers to get outside and enjoy outdoor activities.

About 30 blocks of Broadway from Times Square to Union Square were car-free streets for the exclusive use of pedestrians, cyclists, among others, from 10 in the morning to 4 in the afternoon.

The event, organized by the Department of Transportation, promotes activism against climate change and a sustainable and ecological lifestyle.

Mayor Adams and other elected officials participated by riding bicycles down Broadway.

Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez explains that this is the largest open streets event to date. In total, some 53 public spaces, including streets and squares, were closed to traffic in the five boroughs.

Citi Bike also joined the celebration by granting free and unlimited rides.

This event is part of the Open Streets program, which is held on Saturdays throughout the city throughout the summer.

Earth Day is commemorated this Monday, April 22.

Department of Transportation authorities reported that 53 city streets and squares will be car-free in the five boroughs, where participants will be able to enjoy live music, public art and physical activities.

Citi Bike will also offer free, unlimited 30-minute rides on non-electric bikes.
