Custom made at the request of rapper Pharrell Williams, this Sony PSP in 14 carat gold has just changed owners. And it is another American star who has just offered it following an auction.

The PSP is a portable console that was marketed by Sony in 2004 in Japan, then in 2005 in North America and Europe. With a rather generous catalog of games, the PSP had its followers and some still use it, like any “retro” game console. But some players have other reasons to keep their PSP today: for collection or for the prestige of a unique modelfor example.

Rapper and producer Pharrell Williams is the type to love ‘bling-bling’ high-tech devices a lot : when it was fashionable to use a BlackBerry mobile phone, he had a model with a 14-carat gold shell. In 2008, he decided to follow this logic for his PSP and therefore ordered a custom model: Pharrell Williams’ PSP then no longer had a plastic shell, but a 14-karat gold shell instead.

A gold Sony PSP with substantial value

Basically, the PSP weighs 280 grams, but this “Pharrell edition” weighs 660 gramswhich includes 397.5 grams of gold : not enough to make it a featherweight to play Patapon, but we imagine that it was not the first goal of the rapper. This one tended above all to store it in its personalized Goyard case.

At the time, the financial value of such a console had not been mentioned. However, we know that Pharrell Williams decided to part ways at the end of last yearsince this “golden” PSP was part of objects sold at auction at the beginning of November 2022. A buyer acquired it for the sum of $19,375.

The new owner of the golden PSP is another rap star

It was previously unclear who bought Pharrell Williams’ gold PSP, but the mystery has been solved by the site Kotaku : its new owner is none other than rapper drake. The proof is in the clip of his song Jumbotron Shit Poppin which was posted on January 17: from the first seconds, you can see the console close-up. The report holds it in the hands at 0 min 50 s then at 1 min 29 s like a small trophy.

It turns out to Drake bought many items sold at auction by Pharrell Williams : this 14k gold PSP is just one of many. It is especially amusing to see how this console is used today, namely to highlight the richness of the rapper in a music video. All this will not make us Patapon…
