Düsseldorf.
Many sections of the Autobahn in North Rhine-Westphalia are in need of rehabilitation. The federal government now wants to see which projects should be given priority.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, no decision has yet been made on the motorway projects that are to be tackled more quickly. “The talks are ongoing,” said a spokesman for NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer (Greens) of the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf.

Krischer had made it clear that, from his point of view, important information from the federal government for an assessment, such as the planning status of the selected motorway projects, is still missing. The deadline of just eight days set by Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) is too short.

NRW makes rapid expansion dependent on bridge renovations

As can be seen from a letter from Krischer to Wissing available to the German Press Agency, NRW makes the rapid expansion dependent on the renovation of dilapidated motorway bridges. Krischer asks what the federal government’s concrete plan for the renovation of motorway bridges in NRW looks like. According to Wissing, the federal states should announce by this Friday whether they agree that a project to eliminate bottlenecks will be enshrined in law.

According to Krischer’s letter, North Rhine-Westphalia is a hotspot in terms of motorway bridges in need of renovation. Due to the condition of the Haarbach Viaduct on the A544 in Aachen, there is currently a threat of another motorway bridge being closed. “In view of this, I would like to expressly ask you to use all your capacities to implement the upcoming building renovations quickly and efficiently,” continues the NRW Transport Minister in the letter to Wissing.

Motorway projects should bring less congestion and more fluid traffic

The traffic light coalition had agreed at the end of March that there should be an acceleration for motorway projects that are traffic jams and bottlenecks. That’s a total of 145, but they also include sections of a project. They are mainly in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. The 66 NRW projects on Wissing’s list include various sections on the A1, A2, A3, A4, A30, A40, A42, A43, A45, A52, A57 and A59.

According to the federal government, a total of 988 kilometers of new roads are to be built, which corresponds to 7.5 percent of the existing network. The goal is to get fewer traffic jams and smooth traffic.

Planning times for this could be significantly reduced if an outstanding public interest is determined for a construction measure – but this should be done in agreement with the respective federal state. dpa
