If as many refugees continue to come to Berlin as is currently the case, according to current projections, the accommodation capacities should be sufficient until April. A spokesman for the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) told the Tagesspiegel on request.
On Tuesday, the interior ministers of the federal states will meet with Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) for the refugee summit. Municipal umbrella organizations should also take part. At the summit, the accommodation of refugees will be discussed. According to research by the media service Integration, the capacities for taking in refugees are currently heavily utilized in almost all federal states.
164 places available in initial reception facilities
A total of 31,929 people are currently accommodated in LAF accommodation in Berlin. 2,262 of them sleep in temporary accommodation such as temporary buildings or the terminals in the former Tegel Airport. There are still 69 places available in the temporary accommodation. There are still 164 places in the initial reception facilities and 112 in the community accommodation. The LAF reports that it can provide around 2,000 places in emergency accommodation at short notice.
Between 70 and 80 more asylum seekers and 30 refugees from Ukraine arrive every day. However, not all stay in Berlin, some are assigned to other federal states. If the numbers remain at the same level, the capacities should be sufficient according to LAF information until April.
Berlin’s Senator for Social Affairs, Katja Kipping (left), wrote last week to Federal Interior Minister Faeser, calling for a clear improvement in the situation for asylum seekers in Germany as a lesson learned from dealing with war refugees from Ukraine. “For war refugees from Ukraine, windows and doors opened that were previously closed to other refugees,” she wrote in the letter.
These experiences should also be extended to asylum seekers. In the letter, the senator not only calls for financial support from the federal government, but also for some rules to be checked for their practicability. (with epd)
