He Mexico City International Airport “Benito Juarez” (AICM) reported that on the afternoon of Monday, April 17, a shock between two planes On one of the taxiways, the incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. (central Mexico), for which reason operations on the runways where the accident occurred were temporarily halted.
According to the first AICM report, the crash occurred on land since the aircraft involved were on taxiways B and D of the airport.
So far it is unknown if the aircraft were about to take off or if they had landed on these runways, since the airport authorities have not specified what happened, but according to Internet users who were traveling on the aircraft, one of them was about to take off when it had the accident.
As soon as the incident became known, the airport authorities specified that they had already begun the investigation to find out the causes of the accident that affected the crew, since they had to be transferred to another plane to comply with their transfer. This was announced by the International Airport on its official Twitter account:
“Two aircraft on the ground, between taxiways B and D, had an impact between the wingtip of one and the horizontal stabilizer of the other, without causing harm to anyone. The corresponding authorities began an investigation to determine the causes”, wrote the AICM.
The first reports of the incident explained that the planes involved had only material damage since the crash occurred between the wingtip of one and the horizontal stabilizer of the other, according to the report. At the time of impact, according to the first reports, an aircraft was stopped on the taxiway —apparently awaiting instructions— that’s when it was hit by another aircraft from behind, the plane that hit it joined the same runway where the first plane was parked, so it could not prevent the impact.
The passengers captured some images of how the aircraft was left and shared them on social networks, as they began to wonder what had happened. As reported by passengers of the affected crew, one of the aircraft that collided corresponds to the airline Delta and was heading to New York, United States. While the other plane would belong to the company of Aeromexico.
Later, Aeroméxico was in charge of confirming that one of its aircraft was indeed involved in the accident on Monday afternoon. Through a press release, he specified that the flight AM117 with route Mexico City – Ciudad Juarez He was the one who collided with an aircraft that was about to take off and was on the taxiway.
The plane that crashed was a model Boeing 737-800 and was about to leave for the north of the country when it collided with the company’s aircraft Delta with scheduled flight DL624 in the direction of New York. According to Aeroméxico, there were no injuries and the passengers were transferred to another plane to make their trip.
As for the affected aircraft, it remained on the runway of the International Airport so that the corresponding investigations could be carried out to find the origin of the accident, so it showed accessibility to cooperate with the AICM authorities.
