San José (USA), Apr 21 (EFE).- Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo requested this Friday the return of the one million dollar bail he gave when he was released from prison in California for medical reasons in 2020.

Before returning to prison, Toledo asked the federal judge in charge of the case, Thomas S. Hixson, for restitution of the $500,000 in cash and the other half million dollars in real estate that he paid to be released at the time, the District Court reported. Northern California on its transparency portal.

The amount of the bail was covered at the time thanks to the financial contribution of his wife, Eliane Karp, and a group of friends of the founder of the extinct Perú Posible party.

The former head of the Peruvian Executive, claimed by the justice of his country since the end of 2017 for allegedly having received some 35 million dollars from the Odebrecht company, turned himself in this Friday to the Court of San José (California) as a step prior to being extradited to the Andean country.

He is now being held at the Maguire Correctional Facility, located in Redwood City, in San Mateo County, in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, according to the updated database of this institution.

This prison is already known by the Peruvian professor, who spent a few months there after being transferred from the Santa Rita prison, near the city of San Francisco, after being arrested in July 2019.

The day on which the extradition will be carried out and will pass into the hands of the Peruvian authorities remains to be officially known, but, according to EFE sources close to the former president, “it should not last beyond Monday.”

After exhausting all available resources and legal figures, Judge Hixson ordered the handover of Toledo last Wednesday to complete a process that was endorsed by the US Justice in September and to which the State Department gave the green light in February.

Toledo is charged in his country for the alleged commission of the crimes of money laundering, collusion and influence peddling in relation to the Odebrecht scandal which, in turn, is part of the well-known Lava Jato Case and which affected different Latin American leaders.

Odebrecht also splashed former Peruvian presidents Alan García (1985-1990 and 2006-2011), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018), as well as the three-time presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, daughter of the former president. Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).
