Arlo is an American company that manufactures surveillance cameras. Prior to its August 2018 IPO, Arlo was a brand for such products owned by Netgear, which retained majority ownership after the IPO. According to its own data from January 2022, the company has shipped 21.6 million devices, has 5.82 million registered accounts and around 877,000 customers who pay for the subscription service.

In principle, the cameras can also be used after purchase without a subscription, but offer no real added value for protecting the property or your own four walls – so it’s similar to Ring, the company from Amazon.

At the beginning of the year, several models of its cameras were shelved and informed about this in its EOL policy (we reported). EOL stands for end of life and means that products are no longer supported – end of life or discontinued product.

With Arlo, the first devices should no longer be supported after April 1, 2023: no updates, reduction of functions or even complete discontinuation – depending on the model. The announcement caused a big outcry among customers with older devices. This also went down well with Arlo, so that some people have now rowed back, for example there is a longer period until the “end of life” until 2025:

The relevant FAQ by Arlo has been revised again, but includes a passage that says that the new EOL policy would not apply in Europe. One can certainly speculate as to why this is so, one must certainly coordinate this with the owner of the European business. Not many people know that Arlo sold its European business in 2019. We have already made a press inquiry and will of course inform you about the result.

In any case: The 7-day storage will not be EOL for the products mentioned, so it will not be omitted. Users who currently have a 7-day storage service will continue to receive that service uninterrupted. We will continue to provide security updates for products for one year after the EOL date. This is in response to specific concerns from some users. For example, Pro 2 class devices will now receive security updates until 2026.
